Our range of release liners are products that utilise silicone coatings to give release characteristics to allow materials that would normally stick and be awkward to handle, to be manufactured and used in a convenient manner.
Initially release liners were used in the manufacture of self adhesive labels (labelstock) and self adhesive tapes (pressure sensitive tapes), they are now used for a wide range of applications and markets including medical, graphic arts, industrial, medical, envelopes and food. (We have a wide range of release liners for the food industry – just go to our The Foodwrap Co website for more details
Various factors affect the release properties and mechanics of a release liner. So due to the large amount of factors, the range broad range of coatings and substrates that we use, we always tailored specifically to the end application.
The following are the main factors:-
|Adhesive||Silicone Release Coating||Substrate||Laminate||Converting|
|Chemical Nature||Polymer Type||Type of Paper or Film||Type of Substrate & Flat Sheet||Stripping Speed|
|Modulus||Polymer Properties||Porosity||Flexibility / Stiffness||Physical Dimensions|
|Surface Energy||Modulus||Smoothness||Mode of Adhesive Application||Stripping Angle|
|Coating Weight||Coating Weight||Stiffness / Flexibility||Moisture Content Balance|
|Uniformity of Coating||Uniformity of Coating||Calliper Consistency||Elongation|
|Cure / Cross Linking||Smoothness of Coating||Surface Energy|
|Residual Solvent Level||Cross Link Density||pH|
|Component Migration||Film Continuity||Internal Bond Strength|
|Cure Mechanism||Surface Absorbency|
|Surface Energy||Residual Chemicals from Manufacture|
|Extent of Cure|

Release Liners - Silicone Coatings
Silicone is a material based on polydimethyl siloxane, and to be effective against adhesives it needs to be fully cross linked and anchored to the substrate to prevent migration which will destroy the adhesive properties.
Release Liners - Substrates
The end use of the product will determine what characteristics are desirable in the substrate used to support the silicone.
Release Liners - Paper
Paper is made from trees by removing the bark and chipping the wood into small pieces and dispersing in water to separate the fibres.
Release Liners - Films
The main film types for silicone coating are low density and high density polyethylene.
